Jose Luis Calvo

Jose Calvo was admitted to the Florida Bar in 2002. He started his career at the Office of the State Attorney, as a prosecutor. During his tenure with the State, Jose handled everything from DUI and Domestic violence, to serious felony offenses involving firearms and drugs. Jose is a seasoned trial lawyer with over one hundred criminal trials tried to verdict. Jose is an aggressive and effective trial lawyer.

Jose left the Office of the State Attorney at the end of 2004 to enter private practice in criminal defense. He first practiced as an associate with a large local criminal defense firm, before opening his own office. He was admitted to practice in the Middle District of Florida in May 2004 and has handled many federal cases since then. Jose handles all criminal offenses in State and Federal courts and is a fluent Spanish speaker.

He is sought after for his particular tenacity in drug offenses, to include cultivation (growhouses), possession or trafficking in all types of controlled substances and drugs. Jose is also very adept at motion practice associated with DUI and related criminal traffic offenses, such as Driving on a Suspended License and Driving without a Valid Driver’s License. Jose spends a great deal of time in the Juvenile court system defending the community’s youngest offenders and attempting to resolve their cases in such a way that it does not affect them for the rest of their life.

Jose is a member of the Lee County Bar Association and the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He graduated from the University of Las Vegas and the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Las Vegas.



Katheryn Elizabeth Smith Calvo

Admitted to the Florida Bar in 2001, Kati Smith Calvo is a dedicated litigator with experience in all areas of criminal law. She has represented thousands of clients in each division of the courts: juvenile, misdemeanor, and felony. As a former Assistant Public Defender, Kati has an abundance of actual courtroom experience.

Kati has focused on defending offenses against children, to include Child Abuse and Neglect, Lewd Molestation or Battery, and Sexual Battery. She has an affinity for appellate practice, having written appellate briefs for a law firm in New York throughout law school. She uses that knowledge in her practice, and has experience writing and filing Writs of Prohibition or Writs of Habeas Corpus. Kati was the trial attorney in a case that resulted in a written appellate opinion, C.W. v. State of Florida. In 2009, Kati caught the attention of the national cable channel, TruTV (formerly Court TV) when IN SESSION aired one of her Murder in the 2nd degree trials, State v. Schack.

Kati is a past member of the Calusa chapter of the American Inns of Court and a former adjunct professor at Florida Gulf Coast University in the Criminal Justice program. She is currently an attorney member of the 20th Circuit Unlicensed Practice of Law committee established by The Florida Bar. She is also admitted to practice in the Middle District of Florida and is a member of the Family Law Section of The Florida Bar, and the Lee County Bar Association. She graduated from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York and attended law school at Syracuse University College of Law.
